Nuke threat

Liberal Democrat environment spokesman Norman Baker has warned that the amount of nuclear waste stored in the UK would rise to five times its existing level if the Government goes ahead with plans to build a new generation of nuclear plants.

The figure comes from the Committee of Radioactive Waste Management, but the UK nuclear industry said new reactors would be cleaner than their predecessors and add only 10 per cent to the existing volume of waste. Mr Baker has accused the industry of 'trying to fiddle the figures'.
