Ocon nabs new ops director

Ambitious Manchester contractor Ocon Construction has poached Colin Veitch from Scottish rival Barr to become its group operations director.

The £96 million turnover firm works in the student, hotel, education and retail sectors.

In its first 17 months of trading the company, which grew out of specialist student accommodation developer Opal Property Group, increased turnover from £32 million to £98 million.

But it decided to consolidate after the earlier boom. Pre-tax profits in its latest set of results, for the year to September 2007, jumped from £306,000 to £1.6 million.

Mr Veitch’s CV includes stints at HBG where he was area manager and construction director. He moved from HBG to Renew subsidiary Allenbuild where he was a regional managing director.

Ocon managing director Clive Williamson said he plans to double turnover in the next five years.

Projects it is working on include an apartment, office and retail development at Manor Mills in Leeds and a sports centre for Nottingham University.
