PERKINS has launched its 1100D series of Tier 3 emissions-compliant engines, the first of which will go into customer machinery late next year.
The six-cylinder models in the range will offer up to 51 per cent more torque than the engines they replace, while the fourcylinder engines are up 10 per cent in torque, with fuel consumption claimed to be similar to the current 1100C series.
A great deal of work has gone into lowering noise emissions, too, in readiness to meet the 2006 European machinery noise regulations.
Across the 1106D range noise levels have dropped by a massive 5dB(A), a third lower than previous machines.
The biggest developments in terms of sound reduction have come from new isolating seals between the rocker cover and the head, and the sump and the block. In both cases there is now no metal-to-metal contact, greatly reducing the noise from the engine.
The engine manufacturer, a division of plant giant Caterpillar, will offer the fourcylinder engines with a choice of mechanical or electrical fuel injection control and the six-cylinder motors with electronic control.
Basic ratings will be normally aspirated, with higher power coming from both turbocharging and turbos used in conjunction with aftercooling. All of the turbochargers will use a pneumatic wastegate control, which Perkins has dubbed Smart turbo.
The electronically controlled engines will use a version of parent company Caterpillar's Acert fuel injection control set-up, which finely meters the amount and timing of fuel entering the combustion chamber. To achieve Tier 3 levels of emissions, Perkins has paid particular attention to the fuel injection, using multiple injection sequences to refine the combustion process.
All engines over 300 hp will have to comply with the Tier 3 emissions standard by January 2005, and all engines over 100 hp must come into line by January 2006.
