Petrol prices fuel 10-year inflation high

Soaring petrol prices will today drive the annual rate of inflation to the highest level of since March 1996.
Analysts have forecast a figure of 2.7 per cent for the Consumer Price Index in September, compared with 2.4 per cent in the previous month.

It is thought that petrol prices rose by 5p on the month while other energy costs, including higher gas and electricity bills, also pushed inflation up.
