Pilkington 'can't rule out' job cuts in the UK

GLASSMAKER Pilkington's announcement that it will cut 2,500 jobs worldwide in the next two years could lead to redundancies in the UK.

The cuts will bite deepest in the US and Germany, where the Sherman plant in Texas and the Wesel plant will shut down.

But a company spokesman said the prospect of jobs losses in the UK 'can't be ruled out'.

He said that volumes and prices are flat in the building products sector, which accounts for the biggest slice of Pilkington's business.

The cuts are seen as part of the group's search for improved productivity and manufacturing efficiency.
