Plans in for 800-home scheme on Tyneside

Plans have been submitted for a £140 million regeneration of a former shipbuilding site in the North East.

Developer Places for People handed over an outline planning application to build 800 homes, along with a small number of shops and cafes, on Smiths Dock in North Shields.

Proposals for the 11.8 ha site include a waterfront park with floating gardens, and cycle paths running along the river bank.

The plans have been developed in partnership with members of the local community, North Tyneside Council and other businesses.

Nigel Brewer, project director at Places for People, said:“Today’s planning application marks an important phase in the history of Smiths Dock.

“This is the start of its revival, where the site will, once again, become a destination for local people to live, work and socialise.”
