PRIVATE FINANCE INITIATIVE: Manchester police to build 20 new stations

CONTRACTORS are to be invited next spring to pitch for a £47 million deal to build 20 new police stations across Greater Manchester under the Private Finance Initiative.

Sources say that Greater Manchester Police (GMP) will advertise in The of ficial Journal next spring after it has appointed legal advisors for the project. Up to six outfits will be invited to contest the deal, with a preferred bidder expected to emerge by August 2001.

GMP is understood to seeking sites to buy now so that work on the project can start early in 2002.

Completion is expected during late summer 2004.

Under the proposals, new divisional and subdivisional headquarters will be built at Chadderton, Hazel Grove, Pendleton and Wythenshawe.

A new headquarters and deployment station will be built in Stockport, while other deployment stations will be built in Atherton, Bamfurlong, Cheadle, Eccles, Harpurhey, Horwich, Manchester Piccadilly, Uppermill and Urmston.
