Rail operator axes 150 staff

NETWORK Rail is axing 150 major project staff in a bid to slash costs.

The rail operator is targeting the professionals - such as quantity surveyors, project managers and site managers - who work as consultants.

But Network Rail wants to recruit staff in permanent positions after a recent exercise showed that the rail industry pays 20 per cent more for contract employees than other sectors.

A company source said: 'We have to make efficiency savings but we have a £10 billion portfolio of projects to deliver over five years. We hope a lot of them will come on permanently.'
