Ready-mixed data 'wide of the mark'

Sir, You quite rightly hailed the launch of the National Structural Concrete Specification as a great move forward in concrete construction.

So it was a great pity that your article about concrete waste was so wide of the mark.

The ready-mixed concrete industry is reported to produce 120 million m 3based on the assertion that RMC UK produces 30 million m 3and has a 25 per cent share of the market.

I am sure that my industry colleagues would be delighted if this were the case, but sadly it is not.

The current ready-mixed concrete industry produces around 3a year. While the suggested waste (5 per cent) would result in waste in the region of £60 million, it is nowhere near the reported £400 million.

It should also be recognised that considerable effort is being put in by industry groups such as Construct to reduce over-specified products as evidenced by the above mentioned NSCS.

It is a shame that on a day we should have been heralding great moves towards increasing quality and cost in the concrete industry your report should sour the message.
