Roll call for £80m refurbishment job

FOUR consortia are chasing an £80 million deal to construct and refurbish 18 schools in Edinburgh under the Public-Private Partnership.

From an original list of eight prequalifying groups, the city council has gone for Ballast Wiltshier Special Projects; Capital Schools featuring Balfour Beatty/Morrison; Edinburgh Schools Project, headed up by Amey, and Jarvis.

Bids must be submitted by the end of August, with the council due to appoint its preferred bidder this Christmas.

Work on site will begin during early summer 2001, with the aim of having the schools ready for occupation by August 2003.

The project will provide 10 new primary schools in eight buildings. These will replace 14 existing schools.

The job also calls for the refurbishment of five secondary schools and refurbishing and extending three special needs schools, plus secure accommodation and a community building.
