Sales soar at Tesco

Tesco underlined its dominance of the supermarket sector today after it announced sales were running 14.6 per cent higher than a year earlier.

The improvement in the 12 weeks to May 21 included a total sales rise of 11.3 per cent from its UK business, which was 6.8 per cent higher when new store openings and petrol sales are stripped out of the figure.

In contrast, Sainsbury's unveiled like-for-like growth of 1.7 per cent yesterday, although this was for a three-month period to the middle of June.
