Phase 1 of the plan includes a 16,000 sq m, seven-storey new arts building with recording studios, flexible theatre, performance rooms and cafe, as well as a new build art and design workshop and redevelopment of open space around the building and the university square. The works are estimated between £32m and £38m.

The masterplan was ratified by the university council in 2009. The 24-month contract will include up to six contractors.
