Serve Asbos on all cowboy builders, urges FMB boss

INDUSTRY leaders are calling for Anti-Social Behaviour Orders to be served on all cowboy builders.

Federation of Master Builders director general Ian Davis is demanding that rogue workman are hit with Asbos banning them from working.

The call comes after a case in Cheshire, where a builder was hit with an Asbo to protect the public from being ripped off.

David Flaherty was jailed for three and half years for deception and theft and, under the terms of the five-year Asbo, he cannot work in the building industry when he comes out unless a legitimate construction company employs him.

The Asbo also bans him from advertising, seeking work or taking money for building work.

Mr Davis said: 'The FMB fully supports the use of Asbos to force rogue builders to stop trading. We have been campaigning for many years for real sanctions against cowboys to prevent them from conning consumers.

'We hope that Trading Standards Officers up and down the country will now follow this example of how to tackle rogue builders. The FMB expects the new Government to give them every support in this vital work.'
