Sizewell closure is go

THE Health and Safety Executive has granted consent for the closure of the Sizewell A nuclear power station in Suffolk.

The application by licensee Magnox Electric will allow the station to be decommissioned after its closure at the end of this year, following 40 years of electricity generation.

Sizewell A is the fifth nuclear power station to gain HSE consent for decommissioning.

Magnox Electric, part of the British Nuclear Group, will carry out initial works to defuel the plant. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority is set to release tender documents for the rest of the work in 2008.
