Skills card target stays

THE MAJOR Contractors Group is sticking to its target of achieving a fully qualified workforce by the end of 2003, despite current take-up rates of 55 per cent for skills cards.

An audit of 80,000 workers on MCG sites last month revealed how many employees hold Construction Skills Certification Scheme cards.

The survey showed that 69 per cent of direct employees held cards, compared with just 45 per cent of subcontractors.

MCG director Bill Tallis said: 'We will keep to our target, although we are around six months behind schedule. We're issuing nearly 7,000 cards a month but we need to continue the push into the trades.'
