Snowstruck Britain in grip of big freeze

Much of Britain was blanketed in snow today as a prolonged cold snap looked set to continue into next week.
The Met Office issued severe weather warnings for much of England and Scotland last night as snow in Scotland forced the closure of some schools in rural Aberdeenshire.

The heaviest snow overnight fell on the East, particularly Essex, East Anglia and the North East of England - with more snow expected later in the week.
