Southern sells design arm to Halcrow

SOUTHERN Water has sold its design and survey division to consultant Sir William Halcrow and

Partners, for an undisclosed sum.

About 70 of Southern's specialist engineering, environmental and survey staff will transfer to the Halcrow Group as part of the deal.

The move allows Southern's technology arm to concentrate on providing overall design and feasibility services. Detailed design and specialist services will now be provided by outside firms, such as Halcrow. The agreement was finalised last week after fierce competition from other consultancies.

Southern Water technical director Richard Clayton said: 'Halcrow will gain the specialist engineering skills and the staff will benefit from working within a group that has a global customer base.'

Barry Walton, chief executive of Halcrow Water Division, said he was 'very satisfied' with the deal.
