Spinnaker left f lapping at launch

A LIFT broke down stranding Mowlem's site team during the official opening of the troubled Spinnaker Tower in Por tsmouth on Tuesday.

The contractor blamed 'unusual wind conditions' for the glitch which caused the external lift to get stuck during last minute testing.

A Mowlem spokesman said: 'During final running trials of the Spinnaker Tower's external lift, unusual wind conditions caused a stationary secondary control rope known as the overspeed governor to become detached from its pulley.

'Mowlem will be asking the lift manufacturer, Maspero, to urgently take steps to ensure that the problem does not recur.' The tower was due to open last summer but construction problems delayed the project. It is estimated to be £10 million over budget.
