Stadium evacuated after building site blast

Sheffield United's football stadium has been evacuated after a gas cylinder exploded on a nearby building site.

A acetylene cylinder burst into flames on the seventh floor of a new hotel being built as part of the stadium complex.

Firefighters were called to Bramall Lane to tackle the blaze as more than 100 stadium employees were evacuated this morning.

A fire service spokeswoman said a 200m exclusion zone was in place and a number of roads were closed while firefighters continued to cool the cylinder.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Ian Fenton said: "Approximately 30 staff from Sheffield United have been evacuated from the stadium, 90 people from the business centre and 60 people who were working on the hotel construction. "
