Stainless bridge deal

MATERIALS

SPECIALIST producer Outo- kumpo Stainless has won an order to manufacture a road bridge in stainless steel.

The company, which has its UK base in Sheffield, will supply components to main contractor Ferrovial-Agroman for the new Cala Galdana road bridge in Menorca, Spain.

The 55 m-span, 13 m-wide bridge will replace the existing reinforced concrete bridge, which has suffered from corrosion exacerbated by wind and seawater.

But the firm is also closing its stainless steel tube plant in Blaenrhondda, Wales, early next year, with the loss of 40 jobs.
