Steel standards call


PLANS to withdraw British design standards for structural steel should be stalled until European codes have been proven safe, industry insiders claimed.

Speaking at the British Constructional Steelwork Association centenary dinner last week, president Donal McCormack said: 'It is vital for the construction industry as a whole that British Standards are maintained until such time as the new Eurocodes have been demonstrated to be user friendly, unambiguous and result in safe and economic structures.'
