Step to it

THIS month the HSE launched an initiative called Watch Your Step, intended to promote good order on construction sites. Throughout February sites will be targeted by inspectors to ensure they are well managed and that trip hazards are removed.

Slips and trips are the biggest single cause of reported injuries in the construction industry, and are to blame for over 1,000 major injuries each year. In order to comply with the HSE's requirements, contractors are advised to:

Segregate transport and pedestrian routes n Procure materials at a level that keeps storage to a minimum

Have a site policy for storing materials and removing waste

Keep walkways, stairs and work areas clear.

The initiative will target in particular contractors who have failed to heed earlier messages that untidy sites are unacceptable.
