Street jobs go in cash confusion

WORKERS at Street Construction (Wigan) have lost their jobs following financial problems.

The firm's future was a matter of some confusion as Construction News went to press.

Chairman Michael Heeley said: 'I'm not sure about the exact situation ? you'll have to speak to the chief executive, Philip Hawthorne.' Mr Hawthorne said: 'I'm in meetings and can't say any more.' One ex-employee said: 'We were called in last week and told we were out of a job. The firm has been having problems for a while.' Latest accounts show the firm made a pre-tax loss of £1.48 million on turnover of £28.9 million while employing 107 staff during the year to December 2004.

Mr Heeley said in his report: 'The accounts themselves do not make pleasant reading.'
