Willmott Dixon has appointed leading sustainable development campaigner Jonathon Porritt as a non-executive director of its construction business.

Porritt – who will take up the post in January - is a founder director of Forum for the Future and chairs the Sustainable Development Commission.

He recently followed in the footsteps of former US presidential candidate Al Gore by being named Environmental Personality of the Year in recognition of his campaigning work – the short list for the award included HRH Prince Charles, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and television presenter David Attenborough.

In his new role, Porritt will advise on sustainability issues. By 2012, Willmott Dixon aims to send zero construction waste to landfill and achieve carbon neutrality.

Willmott Dixon chief executive John Frankiewicz said, “Jonathon is an inspirational figure who is widely respected for his work in championing sustainable development – we are excited that his considerable knowledge and insight will soon benefit us on a regular basis as we carry through our own very demanding sustainable development targets.”
