TfL pushes station upgrades

Transport for London has named Tube station upgrades and the Victoria Line cooling project among its priorities for the coming year.

It has £7.8 billion available for capital and operational expenditure but this figure excludes the amount spent on revamping the Underground network under the PPP.

The client said modernisations to Leicester Square and Highgate stations under PPP contracts will be delivered, as well as step-free access at Acton Town in the west and Hendon Central in the north.

TfL’s aim is to have 25 per cent of its network with step-free access by 2010 and planning to provide this is underway for Green Park, Waterloo Baker Street, North Acton, Tower Hill, Paddington, Southfields, Finsbury Park and Vauxhall stations.

Preliminary works for the Tottenham Court Road revamp, in line with requirements for Crossrail, are ongoing with procurement for the main job due to start next January.

So far Morgan Est has confirmed it will bid for the work, which will include new tunnels and a station box as well as lifts and escalators to provide step-free access.

The Victoria Line will be the first on TfL’s network to benefit from a cooling system.

A tender document for the job, which will be carried out in two phases costing at least £25 million each, is expected next month.

In its budget, TfL states: “Major tunnel vent work will commence on the Victoria Line in readiness for the increased demand from the line upgrade.”

So far Taylor Woodrow and Costain have confirmed they are bidding for the work.

A winner will be announced late summer.

Above ground, a winner for the £400 million refurbishment for Victoria Station will be announced this summer with bids in from Costain, Taylor Woodrow, Sir Robert McAlpine and a joint venture of Morgan Est and Balfour Beatty.

Road contractors will be able to bid for the A406 improvements at Bounds Green and the bridge replacement at Hangar Lane. The contract for the refurbishment of the Blackwall Tunnel is set to be re-awarded in November.

Design works are ongoing for the Cross River Tram, Croydon Tramlink Extension and transit schemes for the Thames Gateway.
