THE LARGE shopping centre off Cardiff's Queen Street is called the St David's Centre, so although perhaps lacking imagination it makes sense that a new development bordering it will be called St David's 2.
Designed by architects Benoy for a joint venture of Land Securities and Capital Shopping Centres, the 968,000 sq ft development will stretch south from the borders of its older sibling and will feature car parks and residential development as well as retail malls.
An anchor tenant was found in February in the form of depar tment store John Lewis, which will occupy a 260,000 sq ft store.
There will be a further nine large stores, 93 shops, 25 cafes and bars, 300 homes, space to park 3,000 cars and public areas. The site will also play host to a state-of-theart civic library, designed by Building Design Partnership.
'It's an iconic structure funded through the retail land revenue, ' says Mr Berman.
Enabling works being carried out by Clancy Docwra started in January, and highway operations will run from April to September.
Work has begun on a temporary library to serve the city until the new one is completed in 2008. Detailed design of the shopping centre still remains to be carried out, but last month Bovis won the £330 million construction contract and building should start on site in September, complet ing in 2009.
Work may also take place on the existing Capitol shopping centre.
Sources close to the project suggest that plans currently on the drawing board would modernise and densify the development, adding residential units and raising the height of the current centre.
