The runners at Doncaster

FOUR firms have come under starters' orders for a £20 million design and build racecourse deal in South Yorkshire.

The line-up for the redevelopment of Doncaster racecourse is Laing O'Rourke, Sir Robert McAlpine Shepherd and InteriorExterior.Laing will be hoping it can repeat its recent success at Liverpool's Aintree course, where it won a £34 million revamp deal last year.

And Sir Robert McAlpine will be striving for a win at Doncaster to enable it to complete the double in Yorkshire - the firm has already clinched £20 million-worth of work at York racecourse.

In the meantime, Shepherd will be looking for revenge for the York setback, where Sir Robert pipped it to the post.

The four contestants for Doncaster will price for new build work, which includes a grandstand and a conference centre.
