Three chase sports prize

RIVAL firms are working up bids for a £20 million scheme to build a leisure centre in west London.

Hillingdon Borough Council has lined up Galliford Try, Laing O'Rourke and Oxfordshire-based Leadbitter to price the Uxbridge project. The firms will return bids for the Park Road job on July 4. A start on site is expected in the autumn.

Initial plans for the traditionally tendered scheme feature a 25 m swimming pool, sports hall and fitness centre next to a 1930s open-air pool.

But if the council is successful in its bid for Sport England funding, a 50 m Olympicstandard swimming pool will be built instead. The winning contractor will also refurbish the Grade II-listed open-air pool.

The council gave planning permission to the project two weeks ago. The leisure centre is due to be completed in 2007.
