Three eye gallery job

A TRIO of firms is in the frame for a landmark £20 million art gallery in the sea at Margate.

Kent County Council has lined up Laing O'Rourke, Costain and Nuttall to bid for the new Turner Contemporary, which will be built 8 m off the waterfront.

The three have until November 12 to submit bids for the gallery, which will be connected to the town's pier by a bridge.

Designed by a partnership of UK architect Spence Associates and Norwegian firm Sn hetta, the gallery is shaped like a submarine's conning tower.

Original plans to build the structure out of concrete have been replaced with a steel-based design. Contractors have been asked to build off-site assembly into their bids.Work is expected to start on site next spring.
