Three get psyched up for hospital job

CONTRACTS - CLEVELAND

THREE firms have been lined up to replace a 19th century psychiatric hospital in Middlesbrough with a new facility.

St Luke's Hospital dates back to 1898 and Tees & North East Yorkshire NHS Trust has decided to replace it with a series of modern buildings. Equion, featuring Laing O'Rourke, is going up against Interserve Healthcare and Amec Innisfree for the £78 million PFI deal.

A winner will be chosen next spring with work starting that summer and lasting two years.

The replacement hospital at the Marton Road site will provide specialist mental health and learning disability inpatient services for patients across Cleveland.

The work is part of a wider investment in facilities belonging to the Tees & North East Yorkshire NHS Trust.

Taylor Woodrow is already carrying out similar work as part of the separate ProCure 21 framework.

The firm is building three mental health units in Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees in a deal worth £8.5 million.
