Three listed for Cornish £50m PFI

THREE consortia have been short-listed for a £50 million Private Finance Initiative scheme to revamp or rebuild 36 schools in Cornwall.

The groups on Cornwall County Council's list are: Newschools, featuring WS Atkins and John Mowlem; a Bovis Lend Lease-led team; and 3Is, fronted by Amey.

The deal could prompt a scramble for work among local contractors if Amey's team clinches the concession, which would last 25 years.

A source at Amey said: 'At the moment, we are working on the basis that we would do a lot ourselves, but we are also discussing letting some out.'

If Newschools clinches the concession, the construction work would be carried out by Mowlem's south-western arm, E Thomas.

Bovis would co-ordinate the contract from Bristol, where the firm opened an office more than 20 years ago.

The deal is expected to include primary and comprehensive schools throughout the county, including Camborne and Redruth.
