Three wait on bridge decision

CONTRACTS - HIGHWAYS

THREE companies are waiting to find out who has won a £12 million deal to replace a 20-year-old bridge in County Durham as part of a series of works to upgrade a major route in the region.

The Surtees Bridge over the river Tees near Darlington was built in 1982 by Cementation Construction.

But the Highways Agency wants to widen the A66 dual carriageway it carries over the river from two to three lanes in order to accommodate slip roads to and from the new A66/South Stockton link interchange.

Morgan Est, Balfour Beatty and Interserve will hear shortly who has taken the deal.

Work is due to start next January.
