Tidd quits, Multiplex quits

AGENDA - COMMENT

THE DECISION by Martin Tidd to leave his post as managing director of Multiplex UK marks the point at which the Aussie contractor finally gave up on construction over here.

Mr Tidd is a builder and wants to build things.

The problem is that Multiplex doesn't do too much of that at the moment.

Some of its peers won't be shedding too many tears that a potential rival is pulling out. The firm's most famous project, Wembley stadium, has turned out to be an albatross round its neck.

The irony is that Wembley was supposed to the battering ram with which Multiplex broke into UK construction. Instead , it forced the firm to beat a rather chastened retreat.
