Tighter regs cut solvent level in paint

PAINT producers have just over a year to develop less smelly paints before limits on the level of solvents are introduced in January 2007.

Under the Paint Directive, which came in to force last week, manufacturers must cut the amount of solvents used in paint production by January 1 2007. More stringent targets will be brought in by 2010 in to cut emissions of volatile organic compounds.

The measures will help cut current painting emissions of the sometimes cancer-causing chemicals by almost 60 per cent, according to the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
