Track workers jump out of the way of 101mph train

Two workers had to jump out of the way of a train travelling at 101mph, it has emerged.

The incident involved an East Midlands train on the line at Sundon, Bedfordshire (not pictured) on 12 December 2018.

Neither worker was injured.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch revealed the near miss in an announcement yesterday.

It said it has undertaken a preliminary examination into the circumstances of the incident.

“Having assessed the evidence which has been gathered to date, we have decided to publish a safety digest,” a statement from the investigators said.

A safety digest is an alternative to a full investigation into an incident, where RAIB believes the safety learning from an incident has already been identified in a previous probe.

Last month the RAIB revealed that another near miss incident involving track workers had taken place in March 2018 at South Hampstead station in north London.

A group of workers, who had placed trolleys on a line which was still open to trains, instead of on the intended adjacent line that was blocked, cleared the track with two seconds to spare.

One worker received a minor leg injury.

RAIB made a number of recommendations including clarifying to staff why someone needs to be designated as a ‘person in charge’ and making sure managers are aware of their responsibilities.
