Transport politico calls for national funds body

CORPORATION of London transport chief Joe Weiss is calling on the Government to establish an independent transport body to fund the country's infrastructure.

Mr Weiss said such an executive body would control ring-fenced funds for transport spending, free from political meddling and cutbacks He said: 'This is the only way we will ensure Government spending commitments are kept to in this count ry.

'It is similar to giving the Bank of England independence and is something the French have done very successfully.' Speaking at a House of Commons all-party built environment seminar on Monday, Mr Weiss also called for wholesale cuts to the numbers of transport planners.

He said: 'We have got all our resources in the back office instead of in delivery. What are the 14,500 people at Transport for London actually doing?'
