Two chase Liverpool academy

CONTRACTS MERSEYSIDE

HBG AND Wates are going head-to-head for a £23 million deal to build an Art and Design Academy at John Moores University in Liverpool.

Shepherd and Amec have dropped out of the running for the deal, which will see a new development located next to the famous Metropolitan Cathedral in the city centre.

The academy, designed by Rick Mather Architects, will be stretched out over five floors and provide a wide range of art classes and business workshops for the public.

Planning permission for the development, which will include a two-storey foyer as its centre point, was granted at the end of last year.

Construction work is due to start on site early next year, with completion planned for 2008.
