Two left in Loch Ness dam hunt

TWO TEAMS will go head to head for the monster £85 million Glendoe dam scheme that will sit next to Scotland's world famous Loch Ness.

Hochtief will compete with a Skanska/Morgan Est joint venture for the lucrative deal, which will see the dam stretch from the western end of the Monadliath mountains to the east of Fort Augustus.

The decision means there is no room for shortlisted teams Balfour Beatty and an Amec/Nuttall joint venture.A preferred contractor should be appointed later this month with work taking up to three years to complete.

The 1 km-long dam will stand 35 m tall at its peak and will produce enough electricity to power 35,000 homes.

The project still needs consent from the Scottish Executive.
