UK rescues Volker

RISING profits from its UK subsidiaries helped Dutch contracting giant Volker Wessels offset another woeful performance from its German operation.

In 2005, VW's turnover outside of The Netherlands and Germany totalled £725 million, with UK contractors Fitzpatrick, Gabriel and John Crowley all contributing.

VW, which bought £60 million-turnover Worcester contractor Laser last year, has axed German operations and expects turnover outside The Netherlands to rise £100 million this year to £826 million. Volker Wessels turned over £2.9 billion last year ? up £201 million ? and raised profits £15.5 million to £96.7 million.
