Railfreight Services, of Acton, West London, has taken delivery of a bespoke Volvo excavator to handle ballast for Network Rail near Oxford. The EC 460BLC has a 7 m boom with 3.5 m grab arm and 3 cu m rotating grab for handling type 1 ballast up to 1.7 tonnes per cu m. The 50-tonne excavator has an additional underslung counterweight and underslung cylinders for loading rail wagons, along with a 2 m-high hydraulically operated cab for improved visibility.
