Wates wins £27m library job in Essex

Firm pledges to get 75 per cent of supply chain within 50 miles of Southend

Wates has won a £27m contract to build a new library for Southend.

The Forum, which includes a public and academic library, research and teaching facilities, and a cafe and gallery, is being built for Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, the University of Essex and South Essex College of Further & Higher Education.

Wates said it would recruit 75 per cent of its supply chain within a 50 mile radius of Southend. It also pledged to provide four apprenticeships and recruit local unemployed people for a two-week training course which could lead to other work or training. It will provide 70 days of work experience for local students and school pupils.

The building will be completed in August 2013.
