Sir, I WOULD like to respond to the article 'Death of trades in housing'in the November 4 issue of Construction News.

The argument put forward in it that the industry must deskill in order to cope with the skill shortage - strengthens my view that for many years employers have evaded their responsibility with regard to the training of apprentices to cope with demand.

Yes, they agree to pay the CITB levy - but there ends the story.

Not to recruit and train young people to the highest standard does not solve anything - it simply exacerbates the very problem the employers seek to remedy.
