SERIOUS accidents could occur due to on-site welding conditions reinforcement specialists ROM has warned.

Head of piling reinforcement Stephen Render said typical on-site conditions did not allow reinforcement to be welded according to the relevant standard BS 7123.

'Steel will be rusty or dirty which means the weld may look good but will have little penetration.' he said. Scott Maclean of HSE said the executive had no knowledge of any recent incidents of weld failures causing injuries.
