What are the rights of uncontracted workers?

LETTERS

Sir, I am writing on behalf of my partner and was wondering whether your readers could advise me on his situation.

He has been off work for a short period of time (approximately one week) due to an injury sustained at work.

Because he has never received any written contract from his employers, we believe that they are not under any obligation to pay him sick pay.

But this eye injury was caused as result of him doing his job (cutting metal pipes).

He was not offered any protective eye wear by his employers. What are their obligations as regards sick pay (or even compensation) under these circumstances?
