White City developer ups profits

The company behind the giant White City retail scheme in west London saw operating climb to £852 million last year.

Westfield took over construction work on the scheme, known as Westfield London, in summer 2006 from Multiplex after the Wembley builder decided to cut back its construction exposure in the UK.

Westfield London is due to open in time for the crucial Christmas selling season later this year.
The Australian firm is also behind the Eagle Centre in Derby which opened last year and is one of seven centres the firm manages here.

The group told the Sydney Stock Exchange that 2007’s operating profit was up 12 per cent on last time.

Westfield is also behind a shopping centre scheme that will open in Stratford, east London, a year before the Olympic Games in 2012.
