Work on Olympic stadium to start early

Sir Robert McAlpine will start work on the £500 million main 2012 Olympic Games stadium at the end of May.

The move means the Olympic Delivery Authority is beginning work on the job in east London three months ahead of its original timetable. It is hoping work will finish in spring 2011.

Today’s announcement comes as work on the stadium bowl nears completion and site offices are established for workers.

But before construction begins work will be done to create the podium level and form the Stadium construction platforms. These will be built from recycled crushed concrete from other parts of the site.
