IStructE chief exec retires

The chief executive of the Institution of Structural Engineers has retired after nine years in the post.

Dr Keith Eaton took up the role in September 1999 from the Steel Construction Institute and is credited with reorganising the institution to make it more financially viable.

He said: “It’s been an unbelievable privilege and honour to have had this role as CEO in my own professional body. It hasn’t seemed like a ‘job’ – I have enjoyed every minute of it.”

Martin Powell will become chief executive in March 2009. He is currently chief executive of The Concrete Society.

The institution has 56 staff who work under a council and four directors. It has 24,000 members worldwide.
