JT Atkinson set to expand further in the North-east backed by RBS funding

Independent builders merchants JT Atkinson has opened five new branches in the North of England increasing its estate to 13.

The Middlesbrough based firm, which has been in the Adkinson family for six generations, is growing after securing a loan from RBS, with plans for more store coverage in the North East.

The firm, which began in 1860 registered £25 million in annual turnover in the last fiscal year and has seen its number of employees rise to nearly 200, with around a fifth of this increase coming from the recently opened units.

Graham Robinson, relationship director for RBS CIB in Newcastle, said: “JT Atkinson is positioned for growth and the Royal Bank of Scotland is delighted to be supporting this very well-known North East business. The firm is investing not just in its stores and its staff but also in stock, in additional vehicles, and in upgrading its sales and services technology.”

Jeremy Boyd, JT Atkinson finance director said: “We have plans to open further branches throughout the North-east and will be looking to RBS CIB and its team in Newcastle for high quality support as we expand the business.”
