Balfour and Laing O’Rourke on Heathrow offsite hubs shortlist

Balfour Beatty and Laing O’Rourke are among those in the running to provide offsite hubs supplying components for Heathrow’s proposed expansion.

Balfour’s Birch Coppice Industrial Estate in Tamworth, Staffordshire, and Laing O’Rourke’s Explore Industrial Park, near Worksop in Nottinghamshire, are among 65 hubs shortlisted.

Heathrow will select four winners, which will preassemble and consolidate components before transporting them to the airport.

Its proposed third runway is still awaiting final parliamentary sign-off, with ministers relaunching a public consultation on its proposals last month.

The government is expected to publish its final proposals for expansion next year.

Heathrow chairman Lord Deighton said: “The third runway is not a London-centric project – it is one we are opening up to the whole of the UK, asking for its skills and expertise to help build an asset this country so desperately needs to safeguard its future prosperity.”

The 65 shortlisted offsite hubs are located across the country: five in the East Midlands; two in the East of England; two in London; two in the North-east; eight in the North-west; six in Northern Ireland; 10 in Scotland; two in the South-east; four in the South-west; seven in Wales; six in the West Midlands; and 11 in Yorkshire and the Humber.

The hubs are expected to accelerate project delivery by up to 30 per cent and reduce costs on the project by up to 25 per cent.

National Infrastructure Commission chairman Lord Adonis yesterday told a parliamentary committee that hesitating over a decision on Heathrow was “sacrificing national wellbeing”.
