Carillion’s former HQ in Wolverhampton is to be converted into co-living flats as part of an £8m renovation project.
Development company The Studios24 has bought the Birch Street office, which Carillion vacated three years ago, with the aim of turning the 12-storey tower into 218 en-suite apartments
The co-living spaces will include a shared kitchen on each floor, with a bar and restaurant on the ground floor. Approximately 50 people have taken up spaces, with the refurbishment to complete in 2020.
Carillion moved out of the former Tarmac HQ to a new office in the centre of Wolverhampton in 2015.
The Studios24 managing director Barry Glantz said the project was one of only a few co-living projects to be undertaken outside London.
“It is something which hasn’t appeared in the Midlands before as until now large co-living schemes haven’t really taken off,” he said.
“The idea started a few years ago when I was taking my daughter to university I was looking at accommodation and some of them were not adequate.
“For most people when they leave university they end up with a room in a landlord’s house; it can be a daunting experience for young people.”
The impact of Carillion’s collapse has continued to be felt across both the construction and public sectors.
Earlier this month Oxfordshire County Council published an audit of Carillion’s 10-year contract with the authority, which revealed a multitude of failings including missing certificates, fire safety issues and unfulfilled planning conditions.
The audit cost £1.7m to undertake, with the cost of remedial works expected to be published early next year.
